Gua sha

Gua Sha

Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that has been used for centuries to support circulation, release muscle tension and promote the body’s natural healing processes.

Using a smooth-edged tool, gentle strokes are applied to the skin to stimulate blood flow and encourage movement within the tissues. This technique is often used on the neck, shoulders and back where people commonly hold tension.

Gua Sha can be used alongside acupuncture or as part of a treatment when appropriate.

How Gua Sha Works

In Chinese medicine, healthy circulation of Qi (energy) and Blood is essential for the body to function well. When circulation becomes stagnant, it may contribute to discomfort, stiffness or a feeling of tightness in the body.

Gua Sha aims to stimulate circulation in the treated area, supporting the body’s natural processes and helping tissues relax.

During treatment, the skin may temporarily show small red or purple marks called “sha.” These marks are not bruises and usually fade within a few days as circulation improves.

What Gua Sha May Be Used For

In clinical practice, Gua Sha may be incorporated into treatment for:

  • Muscle tension and tight shoulders
  • Neck and back tightness
  • Head and jaw tension
  • Sports recovery
  • General muscle stiffness

Your treatment will always be tailored to your individual presentation.

What to Expect

Gua Sha is typically performed with oil applied to the skin to allow smooth gliding of the tool. The pressure can be adjusted to suit your comfort.

Many people describe the sensation as firm but relieving, particularly in areas of muscle tension.

If Gua Sha is suitable for you, it may be included as part of your treatment with Jennifer.
