Moxibustion

Moxibustion

Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy that involves the gentle warming of acupuncture points using a dried herb called mugwort (Artemisia). The warmth penetrates deeply into the body, helping to support circulation and promote balance.

This warming therapy has been used for centuries as part of Chinese medicine treatments and is often used alongside acupuncture.

How Moxibustion Works

In Chinese medicine, warmth is considered essential for healthy circulation and the smooth movement of Qi (energy) and Blood.

When the body becomes too cold or circulation slows, symptoms such as pain, fatigue, digestive issues or menstrual discomfort may arise.

Moxibustion gently warms specific acupuncture points to:

• Encourage circulation
• Support the body’s natural balance
• Warm and nourish the system
• Assist the body’s natural healing processes

The treatment is relaxing and many patients enjoy the deeply soothing warmth.

What Happens During Treatment

Jennifer may use moxibustion during your acupuncture treatment if it is appropriate for your presentation.

A small moxa stick (similar to a cigar) is lit and held near the skin to create a comfortable warming sensation over selected acupuncture points. The herb does not touch the skin and the temperature is carefully controlled.

Many patients describe the feeling as deeply relaxing and comforting.

When Moxibustion May Be Used

In Chinese medicine, moxibustion is traditionally used as part of treatment plans that support:

• Muscular tension and pain
• Digestive health
• Menstrual health
• Fatigue and low energy
• Fertility and reproductive health
• Support during pregnancy (for specific presentations)

Your treatment plan will always be tailored to your individual health goals.

A Gentle, Traditional Therapy

Moxibustion is one of the oldest therapies in Chinese medicine and continues to be widely used today.

When used as part of a personalised treatment plan, it can be a comforting and restorative addition to acupuncture care.
