Frequently Asked Questions
Does Acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture needles are very fine – about the thickness of a human hair. Most people feel little to no discomfort when the needles are inserted. You may feel a gentle sensation such as warmth, heaviness, tingling or a dull ache, which is a normal response and part of the treatment process.
What happens at my first appointment?
Your first appointment is slightly longer so Jennifer can take the time to understand your health history and current concerns.
This appointment typically includes:
A detailed discussion about your health and goals
Chinese medicine diagnosis (including pulse and tongue assessment)
An acupuncture treatment
Personalised lifestyle or dietary advice if relevant
The aim is for you to feel heard, supported and relaxed throughout the process.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments varies depending on your individual health concerns, how long symptoms have been present, and how your body responds to treatment.
Jennifer will discuss a recommended treatment plan with you after your initial consultation.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Loose, comfortable clothing is best. Many acupuncture points are located on the arms and legs, so clothing that can be easily rolled up is helpful.
Blankets are available so you can stay warm and comfortable during treatment.
Is acupuncture safe?
When performed by a qualified and registered practitioner, acupuncture is considered very safe.
Jennifer is a registered acupuncturist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and follows strict hygiene and safety standards, including the use of single-use sterile needles.
Can acupuncture help with fertility?
Many people choose acupuncture as part of their fertility support. Treatments may focus on supporting overall wellbeing, regulating cycles and helping the body prepare for conception.
Acupuncture is often used alongside conventional fertility care. If you are working with a GP or fertility specialist, Jennifer is happy to work collaboratively with your healthcare team.
Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?
Acupuncture is commonly used during pregnancy to support comfort and wellbeing.
Jennifer has extensive clinical experience and will tailor treatment appropriately for each stage of pregnancy.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is required to book an acupuncture appointment.
However, if you are currently under the care of another healthcare provider, acupuncture can often be integrated alongside your existing treatment plan.
Can I claim with private health insurance?
If your health fund includes extras cover for acupuncture, you may be able to claim a rebate.
Payment is made at the time of your appointment and a receipt will be provided for claiming with your insurer.
- Initial consultation: approximately 60 minutes
- Follow-up treatments: approximately 45 minutes
This allows time for both assessment and treatment.
What should I do after acupuncture?
Most people feel relaxed after treatment.
It is recommended to:
- Drink water
- Avoid strenuous exercise immediately after treatment
- Allow time for rest if needed
When will I start to notice changes?
Everyone responds differently. Some people notice changes after their first treatment, while for others it may take a few sessions.
Acupuncture works by supporting the body’s natural processes, so progress can be gradual.
Im nervous about trying acupuncture. Is that normal?
Absolutely. Many people feel unsure before their first treatment.
Jennifer takes a gentle and supportive approach, explaining each step and ensuring you feel comfortable throughout the session.
